Should I Shave Before Laser Hair Removal?
Usually, yes—but shaving and pulling hair out are very different preparation steps. Before your laser appointment, the goal is not to arrive with the longest possible hair. It is to prepare the right area without irritating your skin or removing the hair the treatment needs to target.
Why shaving is different from waxing
A razor cuts hair at the surface. Waxing, sugaring and tweezing pull hair out. Laser hair removal targets pigment in the hair, so these methods are not interchangeable before a session. Tell us when you last used each method rather than assuming a recent wax is helpful preparation.
Mayo Clinic's general guidance recommends shaving the day before treatment and stopping waxing, plucking or electrolysis at least four weeks beforehand. Your own instructions still matter: confirm the timing for your skin, treatment area and appointment instead of treating an internet checklist as your personal plan.

What if shaving leaves your skin irritated?
Please tell us before the visit if shaving causes cuts, soreness, a rash or inflamed bumps. Do not repeatedly shave over the same irritated patch to make it look perfectly smooth. The specialist needs to assess the area and advise whether the planned appointment is appropriate.
Also mention recent tanning, sun exposure, skin treatments and medicines. Do not stop prescribed treatment on your own. Ask the prescribing clinician when medical guidance is needed.
What about a back or another hard-to-reach area?
Ask us how to prepare before attempting an awkward shave. Confirm the exact boundaries too: a back, shoulders and a combined service are not automatically the same appointment. Do not assume that an extra preparation service or a larger area is included.
Three questions before your appointment
I waxed recently. Should I keep the laser appointment? Tell the studio the date and area first. We will need that information before advising you; do not assume that shaving now undoes a recent wax.
Should I let the hair grow long so the laser can see it? No. Long surface hair is not the objective. Follow the preparation instructions for the selected area.
Can I use the same preparation for every zone? Confirm it. Access, skin condition and the area boundaries can differ. A clear question before the visit is better than guessing.
