Microblading vs Nano Brows: What Is the Better Choice for Your Eyebrows?

When people start researching permanent makeup for eyebrows, the first term they usually find is microblading. For many years it has been one of the most well-known techniques in the industry.
However, permanent makeup has evolved significantly over the last decade. Today, many experienced artists and clients are choosing modern machine techniques, such as Nano Brows, because they are more controlled and often gentler for the skin.
I have worked in the beauty industry for 24 years, and for the past 10 years I have specialized in permanent makeup. Over this time I have seen how techniques, pigments, and skin responses change over the years.
My goal today is not simply to create beautiful eyebrows, but to achieve results that look natural and age well over time while respecting the health of the skin.
Why I Personally Stopped Working With Microblading
Interestingly, my journey in permanent makeup actually started with microblading.
Like many artists entering the industry at that time, I trained in this technique and began offering it to clients. However, after about three to four months, when the first healed results began to appear, I started observing how different skin types reacted.
In some cases I noticed:
changes in skin texture
blurred strokes over time
pigment shifting in color
Because of this, I made a decision early in my career to stop performing manual blad techniques and instead focus on studying machine-based permanent makeup techniques in depth.
For the past 10 years I have worked exclusively with machine techniques, and I continue to observe how the skin heals and how pigment behaves over time with returning clients.
This long-term observation is extremely important when working with permanent makeup.
Why European Skin Often Reacts Differently
Microblading became widely popular in parts of Asia, where the technique was originally developed.
However, European skin often behaves differently because of variations in collagen and elastin structure.
When manual cuts are made in the skin, healing can sometimes lead to:
small scar tissue
uneven skin texture
strokes that blur over time
For this reason, many modern artists prefer less invasive machine techniques.
What Are Nano Brows?
Nano Brows are created using a machine with an extremely fine needle rather than a blade.
Instead of cutting the skin, pigment is implanted in a very controlled and gentle way.
Another important difference is how the strokes are created.
Rather than one solid cut, the line is formed from many micro-dots placed very close together.
By carefully layering these points, the artist can build:
natural-looking strokes
soft shading transitions
more dimensional results
subtle 3D effects
This method allows much more control over the final result and often produces softer, more natural healed results.
How I Design Eyebrows
For me, eyebrow design is never just about the brows themselves.
Before every procedure I carefully analyze the entire face. This includes:
natural facial anatomy
bone structure
eyebrow growth pattern
overall facial balance
The goal is to create eyebrows that harmonize with the entire face, rather than focusing on one isolated feature.
Is the Procedure Painful?
Most clients describe the procedure as very manageable.
The sketching and design process is done without anesthetic, and clients usually describe the sensation as a light scratching on the skin.
Before the main part of the procedure begins, topical anesthetic is applied, and after that most clients feel very little discomfort.
Healing Process
Healing happens gradually. During the first few days the color may appear darker. Then a light peeling stage occurs.
The final color becomes visible after about 3–4 weeks, which is why a refinement appointment is usually recommended around 5–8 weeks later.
How Long Do Nano Brows Last?
Permanent makeup does not stay the same forever.
On average, results last about 1–2 years depending on:
skin type
lifestyle
sun exposure
skincare routine
Over time the pigment fades gradually while maintaining a natural tone.
Complimentary Consultation
Before any permanent makeup procedure, clients are welcome to schedule a complimentary consultation.
During this appointment we:
discuss expectations
evaluate the skin
design eyebrow shapes
sometimes sketch multiple options
Only after reviewing everything together does the client decide whether they feel comfortable moving forward with the procedure.
