Why Does My Eyeliner Disappear When I Open My Eyes?

You finish the line, open your eyes and barely see it. So you add more—and suddenly the makeup feels much heavier than you wanted. Before buying a different eyeliner, check where the line sits when your eyes are open and relaxed.

The closed-eye view can be misleading

With hooded eyes, a fold of skin can cover part of the mobile lid when the eyes are open. A shape that looks balanced on a closed lid may sit inside that fold when you look straight ahead. That is a placement problem to explore, not a reason to dislike your eyes.

Try one small change at a time

First, look straight into the mirror with your eyes comfortably open. Avoid holding your brows high throughout the check: you want to see the shape you wear in everyday conversation. Then decide what you want to see—a little definition close to the lashes, a soft outer accent or a visible wing.

Second, start with a thin line close to the upper lashes. Check it with the eyes open before adding thickness. Charlotte Tilbury's guidance for hooded eyes recommends thin liner and an eyes-open approach when planning a wing. More product across the whole lid is not automatically the answer.

Third, compare the result from a normal viewing distance. You may prefer a small amount of definition to a large wing. The goal is a look you enjoy wearing and can repeat, rather than winning a close-up comparison with someone else's eye shape.

Hidden liner or transferred liner?

These are different frustrations. If the line is still where you put it but disappears into a fold, look at placement. If color moves onto another part of the lid, you are dealing with transfer as well. Notice when that happens and which products you used. Changing one step at a time makes it easier to see what helped.

Make it a specific makeup-lesson goal

You can come to a personal makeup lesson with one clear question: “Can you help me place eyeliner so I can see it with my eyes open?” Bring the liner and tools you normally use. At Perfect Place, lessons with Maria include looking at your makeup bag and practicing on your own face. A small technique you can repeat is useful long after the appointment.

Quick questions

Do hooded eyes have to wear a wing?

No. A wing is a style choice. A thinner lash-line look may be closer to what you want for everyday makeup.

Should I make both lines identical with my eyes closed?

Check the overall effect with both eyes open as well. Your everyday expression matters more than judging only the closed lids.

Is a makeup lesson the same as eyeliner PMU?

No. This article is about removable makeup and learning application. Permanent eyeliner is a separate procedure and requires its own consultation.
